Futures For Standardbreds (FFS, futuresforstandardbreds.org) a non-profit organization committed to retraining off-the-track Standardbred horses to prepare them for a life after racing, is hosting a multifamily barn/garage/yard sale, May 9-10, to support its work.

“It costs an average of between $500 and $3000 per horse to care for and train these fabulous horses so that they can have a second career after racing,” said Deb Dubois, an FFS trainer. “Harness racing horses are required to retire at the age of 14, and since horses can live to be 30, all these horses need second careers. Budgets are always tight, and prices are always rising.”

FFS promises an arena full of everything from sinks to saddles, dorm room basics, housewares, barware, and much more, plus riding clothes, and equipment from bridles to cart.

The sale will be May 9-10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at FFS’s main barn at Photo Finish Farm at 244 Rankin Road, Buxton, Maine. All proceeds will go to the care and training of the horses.

FFS accepts applications from anyone in New England interested in adopting. Volunteers from the organization examine the facilities, assess the ability of the rider and the compatibility of the horse and rider to determine the best match.

“Our goal is to secure placement for these agile and multi-talented horses before they face uncertain futures. In our program, we start with an assessment of health and temperament, then we undertake a systematic process of retraining them to be ridden under saddle and/or driven for pleasure,” said Ann Ewing, FFS event coordinator.

Courageous, Jet, Cyclone Pass and Niles would tell you that their lives after racing are happy and healthy, and their adopters would tell you they are dedicated to their horses.

About Futures For Standardbreds

Futures For Standardbreds is an independent, nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c) (3) organization located in southern Maine. We are funded through the generosity of individual donors and grantors. In addition, the required fees paid by adopters are used only to help more Standardbreds benefit from our program.

Mission
Futures For Standardbreds is committed to providing sound and retrainable standardbred horses that have retired from racing, or are not suited for racing for other reasons, the opportunity to transition from life on the racetrack to life as pleasure horses. We accept a limited number of horses into our program, lead them through a training program and undertake a thorough process to match those horses with enthusiastic and dedicated adopters who have the experience and ability to give our graduates a safe and secure life after racing.
