Details:

"Dorothy was born poor. Her father abandoned the family when she was only six and she grew up in a Western Pennsylvanian manufacturing town that was dying around her. Her mother made a desperate move across the state in search of work, and Dorothy took her first job unloading IBM equipment from freight trains on the midnight shift. Seeing her then in her dirty overalls and work gloves, few would have guessed where she was headed. Dorothy was inspired by the stories of self made people, and especially Helen Gurley Brown, the trailblazing editor of Cosmopolitan, who started life with similar disadvantages. Dorothy adopted a personal motto: live with purpose, passion, and mission. She rose quickly. First handing in her work gloves for clipboard managing the warehouse. Then into an office role, and eventually into IBM's pioneering division for outsourcing computer services. She traveled the country negotiating multimillion dollar contracts and ultimately became a Senior International Negotiator, living and working in more than 50 countries. Many of the artworks, objects, and furniture in this sale come from her global journey. In retirement, Dorothy poured her energy into community service, eventually becoming a skilled auctioneer who helped raise millions for charitable causes. Even though she has passed, her generosity endures — the bulk of her estate will go to support the charities she championed in life." We would like to thank Dorothy's brother Alex for providing us with this brief glimpse into her amazing life.
