Details:

I told my wife it was “the stuff” or me. She finally let me back in the house, and she begrudgingly decided to let stuff go (I mainly believe it’s because: 1. she realized that if she sold her stuff she could then start buying more, and 2. she would need me to help haul the bigger pieces of the new stuff). I mean, she’s told me several times men are everywhere but you just don’t find a Royal Doulton platter every day!
I have to say I’m delighted. After we hosted the intervention, she started down the path of recovery. I mean, the first step is admitting you have a problem…
But she’s been a trooper setting about saying her final goodbyes to various things. I’m pretty sure I saw a tear in her eye on more than one occasion.

But honestly, this sale is due to what happens when you have a Victorian home you’ve been restoring for 27 years while mostly living elsewhere and a love of antiques…
You collect…and collect, always trying to find that perfect piece for that envisioned room.
So for more years than we care to admit, we’ve been buying and collecting antiques. We also buy and sell, keeping pieces for “someday” that “might work”.
And just like goldfish will grow to the size of their fishbowl, our antique collection has grown to the amount of storage we have (a couple houses, a couple shipping containers, a garage, a 28’ trailer, the attic of the Victorian, the 2nd floor of our other house….yeah, you sort of get the picture).
We’re near the end of our journey restoring the Victorian and as rooms come together we realize we have WAY TOO MUCH STUFF!

The last several days were spent pulling more out of all the “fishbowls”, setting up tents and tables, organizing and identifying FREE items, and trying to figure out how the **** my wife managed to buy all this stuff!
Now to be fair, some of this was bought for her antiques business. And some that was bought for the antiques business was determined too good to sell to some stranger and instead was redirected into safe storage. And some was bought expressly for decor for our Victorian house. Unfortunately the Victorian also became our “overflow”.
And we have some stuff because she’s a collector of many things, and once collected it’s time to collect something else. And some…well I have no earthly idea why we still have it other than it was easy to stick in box to deal with another day!
Now, I’ve been doing some math. If 10,000 people came and bought one thing, that would leave us with only about 10,000 things left! But if everyone came and bought 2 things…well, she’d probably tell me there is a great future in selling stuff and she’d promptly run out and buy truckloads more!
So pack a lunch, get a cooler with your favorite energy drink or electrolyte replenishment(hey, I don’t mind if you wander around with a cold beer or a glass of wine - drunk people spend more money), put on comfortable shoes, load up the family, and come find things for your collections so your significant other can host an intervention down the road!

Thursday thru Sunday 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.
