Whee! It's time for the annual Friends-of-Katie Festival on Stoney Creek Road in Dauphin; this year we've scheduled it for Saturday May 26 from 10 am - 4 pm. We grow tall bearded iris here, thousands of them. Sadly the 26th will be just past the peak of bloom, but there should still be a nice show. Some are available for sale, most are already sold out, but they're all beautiful. You can wander around and enjoy them, no pressure. If you want to buy some, there's a couple hundred pots available, or you can order for fall shipment. We have tomato plants, many heirloom varieties, available for sale. We have other plants for sale. Exactly what is somewhat murky at this moment. There are healthy potted Kousa dogwoods ready to go, though, ranging from 2'-5'. We'll have vendors here with nice stuff - homegrown produce including locally grown just-ground flours, baked goods, quality handmade items including goat's milk soaps, exquisite knit socks, cuddly felted stuffed animals, funky crocheted animal hats, jewelry, hand spun yarns ( and a spinning demonstration). We'll have food for sale. We'll have an artist here with lovely painting and notecards for sale. We'll have strawberries for sale. There might be other things too, but it's hard for some of my friends to make firm commitments in the spring, so let's just hope for the best. We'll have live music provided by a local group called Dovetail. Bring a couple of lawn chairs or a blanket if you want to hang out and listen to them. We'll provide fur therapy in the form of eight darling kittens on the back porch - and they already have homes, so you can come cuddle them without angst. We think of this at the Arts Festival for People who Don't Want to Walk Far. It's just a nice day here at our small farm, sharing the flowers while they're in bloom, helping our friends who earn their living farming or baking or making crafts. Here's the downsides, and I hope you read them: We do NOT want you to bring your dog; there's too many poultry here, plus the kittens and our own dog. Parking stinks, it's like a Tetris game with wheels, and everyone who comes needs to pay attention to the guy at the end of the driveway directing traffic. You're expected to respect the property and use the designated footpaths through the beds. Small children who rip around unsupervised will be caught and sold. The majority of the iris are now on top of the hill, and it is unfortunately not an easy climb for anyone with physical limitations. There are weeds like you wouldn't believe. Don't come early; the vendors' trucks will be blocking the driveway until they're unloaded, and that's going to be last-minute. If you can handle all that, you're welcome to join us! 1170 Stoney Creek Road, Dauphin, starting at 10 am.
